The Development of the carton
The cartoon can be considered the pictorial paper pattern of tapestry, made in real size.
It is possible to find “grisaille” or sepia colours but the most part of those we have received in our time are painted with oil or watercolour on paper or canvas. The pattern is often accompanied by written notes or comments left by the painter “Cartonnier” to guide the master weaver. It is also the “upside-down” version of the original work and tapestry.
The Development of the carton
During the technique of weaving the tapestry said “low lisse”, the cartoon was positioned horizontally under the warps of the loom and the weaver could see it enlarging the wires themselves. When the term “the miracle of Aubusson” is used, it means that the weavers work in reverse without seeing directly the result, except with the aid of a small mirror slid between the wires of the frame.
